Bible verse of the day

He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.

The Jaycee Dugard story shows that every life is sacred..
For she is a mother from acts of violence.
And her daughters were conceived in rape.
And their lives are sacred.

Backstory

Jaycee Dugard, her two daughter 4 all lives sacred? What does these have to do with each other? I’m sure their phenomenal story needs no introduction. But let me refresh our minds. At age 11, Jaycee Lee Dugard was abducted out of South Lake Tahoe, California. During captivity, she become pregnant from her Kidnapper Philip Garrido’s repeated rapes. On August 18, 1994, Jaycee gave birth to her first daughter, Angel. She was 14 when she gave birth. Again, on November 13, 1997, Jaycee gave birth to her second daughter, Starlit.

For 18 years, Dugard would be held captive in the backyard shown above. And her daughters spent their first years also held captive. On August 26, 2009, Jaycee and her two children were found. Soon, Dugard and her two daughters were reunited with her family. And Dugard was awarded custody of both her daughters. To this day, her story and that of her daughters, amazes me. There are many lessons that can be learned from the Jaycee Dugard story. The obvious ones? Never give up hope. Be observant and report anything that looks suspicious. Protect your children. Don’t walk alone but groups. Police can make mistakes. You can survive anything if you have to.

But one lesson seems to be missed over and over in Dugard’s story.

What Can Be Missing?

This amazing and extraordinary story is almost always seen from Jaycee’s perspective. This is because we pay attention to what we know most. What is in front of us. Books about her have been written. And Dugard herself has written two books. The first one is called A Stolen Life, about her 18 years in captivity to Philip Garrido and Nancy Garrido. The second book, Freedom, covers Jaycee’s life now as she has been rebuilding it. What is missing from this tremendously encouraging, amazing, and hope-giving narrative?

Conceived in Rape-Twice

What must this narrative be like from the perspectives of Angel and Starlit? The two girls were born into captivity. All their formative years were spent with a father who had kidnapped their mom. This was all they knew. For all we know, they got no medical care growing up. And they never went to school. Both girls were homeschooled by a mom who was never allowed to go past the sixth grade. Who knows what they saw? Their mom had done her best to shield them from their father’s insanity. And they did not know that they were conceived in rape. That would come later.

Growing Up As Captives

It is hard comprehending abduction from Jaycee’d perspective. Before she was abducted, she had a normal life. But her daughters? I think it’s safe to say that none of us can relate to being born and raised in captivity. Yes, I know that many can relate to being conceived in rape. It’s safe to say that the struggles of Angel and Starlit only began when they and their mom were rescued. It was no doubt in counseling that they learned the awful truth about their pasts. They no doubt know that they have been conceived in rape. And they know that the man who fathered them is a kidnapper, rapist, and criminal.

And They Are Abortion Exceptions?

Angel and Starlit no doubt are aware that they are “the abortion exceptions.” And I’m sure that they can’t help but see that most in their culture believe that their mom should have had the right to abort them. She conceived in rape, right? Their conceptions were forced on her. Under the most horrific circumstances! After all, she was a victim. Why “revictimize” her by making her go through two “compulsory pregnancies”? In their quiet moments, they no doubt face identity issues because of this alone. Their “childhood” circumstances only intensify it. But their survival shows that their lives are sacred. And that every life is sacred.

Sanctity of All Life: Every Life

Angel and Starlit can be comforted by one thing. Their mom has always referred to both of them as my children, not as “my abductor’s children.” And she has always spoken of them as my daughters, never as “my kidnapper’s daughters.” Their grandparents have warmly welcomed them for their daughter’s sake. This, too, has no doubt helped their identity. Of course, these two young women know who their biological father is. And they will have to make peace with the fact that they were conceived in rape.

Jaycee Dugard Story N Every Life Sacred

We can treasure the Jaycee Dugard story not only because she was found alive. And after eighteen years! Let’s celebrate it because of its life-affirming themes of the sanctity of two lives conceived in rape. Neither Angel nor Starlit was planned. And they were not conceived in love or remotely normal circumstances. But both girls are loved and planned by God. It is caring for them that Dugard was able to stay sane in an impossible situation. And
caring for her gave her life meaning. Even then.
