Parenting As An Option
Its Problems

Parenting. Facing an unplanned pregnancy? No doubt you don’t think parenting is an option. Raising children is a huge responsibility! That’s what makes unplanned pregnancies difficult! Those in such crisis feel so confused, upset and scared. Your angst makes sense! Many of you are single. So in raising a child you’d have to face single parenthood. And you know it’s tough! Many women who choose life for their babies pick this option. If you’re low-income, you can apply for Medicaid, Food Stamps, and Women, Infants and Children (WIC). You can apply for Temporary Assistance for Families (TANF). Yes, these programs tend to be limited. There’s stigma attached to them. These programs aren’t meant as a lifestyle. They’re meant to get you on your feet. Much help is available for single parents. Especially single moms. But parenting may not be for you.

Parenting As An Option
Advantages

Parenting. It has advantages. Raising a child builds your character. Loving your child awakens your maternal or paternal instincts. It develops your empathy, affection, compassion and patience. It matures you. You get to see your child grow up. You bond with her. She bonds with you. You’re needed. You’ll have the thrill of being called “Mom” or “Dad.” Through your child, you’ll meet other parents. You’ll meet people you may otherwise have never met. Your role binds you to all other moms and dads. You celebrate your child’s milestones. You know that you played a huge part in getting her where she is. She gives your life purpose.

Parenting As An Option
Disadvantages

Parenting. It has disadvantages. They’re obvious. That’s what your angst is based on. Right? You’re aware of the disadvantages! Raising a child is a challenge in ideal circumstances. In your situation, it poses many more challenges. To be a decent parent, you have to find a place to live. You can’t raise her in the street! You have to face the stigma and paperwork of public assistance. If you don’t want to get public assistance, you have to find a job. Juggling employment and child-rearing is a crushing burden. How can you be a good parent and a good employee? You can’t give your child enough time! You may feel resentment at what you’ve lost because of keeping your child. That’s true even though you love your her. You may remarry and give her a stepparent. But as good as a stepdad may be, he can’t replace the hole of a biological dad. Adoption can help much but how many stepdads adopt their stepchildren?
